Austria remains divided in two regarding the weather situation. After the storms in Vorarlberg caused numerous floods, the weather service Ubimet now forecasts heavy rainfall for the coming days in the east.
In the night to Sunday, starting from Slovakia and Hungary, partly heavy rain sets in eastern Austria. The precipitation area will spread towards the Vienna Woods on Sunday morning. “Basically, you have to expect rain in the course of Sunday from the Weinviertel to Mittelburgenland,” said an expert from Ubimet.
There will be embedded thunderstorms, correspondingly large amounts of rain are therefore forecast, especially for the second half of the day, locally about 60 to 90 liters per square meter. For August, such heavy precipitation is considerable. According to Ubimet, this is an event that has not often occurred in the last decade. Locally, sudden flooding may occur, especially in urban areas – such as Vienna – where water cannot subside.
The weather pattern will continue Monday. The possibility of embedded thunderstorms remains. From Weinviertel to northern Burgenland, Ubimet expects 80 to 110 liters per square meter.Further local flooding is also possible there in Vienna, but also in the Leithagebirge. The smaller streams there can flood in a short time despite the drought.
In Linz and Klagenfurt, it will remain dry throughout, except for isolated showers. The situation will also ease on Tuesday in the east but stay unsettled. The weather will not improve until midweek.
