The annual rehearsal of the signal tones serves to check the technical equipment of the warning and alarm system and is intended to familiarize the population with the signals.
What the siren signals mean
The meaning of the signals: “Siren rehearsal” (15 seconds), “Warning” (three minutes of constant continuous tone) – approaching danger! Observe behavioral measures announced via radio, TV sets, or the Internet, “Alarm” (one-minute rising and falling wailing tone) – seek protective areas or premises, follow behavioral measures announced via radio, TV sets, or the Internet, “All-clear” (one-minute constant continuous tone) – end of danger! Observe further instructions via radio, TV sets, or the Internet.
The warning and alarm system is operated by the Ministry of the Interior together with the offices of the provincial governments. Austria is one of the few countries to have a nationwide siren warning system. Depending on the dangerous situation, the sirens are triggered by the federal warning center in the situation center of the Ministry of the Interior, by the provincial warning centers of the individual provinces, or by the district warning centers.
Also KATWARN test on Saturday
In addition to the activation of these sirens, a test activation of KATWARN Austria/Austria will also be carried out by the Federal Warning Center during the test alert. With this system, information and warnings from various authorities are transmitted to mobile individual end devices such as smartphones on a location-related or occasion- or topic-related basis. The system is intended to supplement warning options via sirens, loudspeakers, and media.
