The comeback of mandatory use of FFP2 mask in Austria

A mask can prevent many infections, hospitalizations, and long covid cases.

Fact: Fewer and fewer people are wearing masks. Many also skillfully dangle them from one ear. While some mask fatigue is understandable – the coronavirus is not tired. Quite the opposite: we are in the midst of the autumn wave.

Statements like “I’ve been vaccinated three times, so it’s no big deal if I catch it” are understandable to a certain extent. But people forget that you can suffer from long covid after an infection despite vaccination. And it is also about the protection of chronically ill people. People with immunodeficiency are not protected from a severe course despite immunization. They have a right to participate in public life without fear of infection.

In addition: The mask protects very well against coronaviruses and keeps other pathogens away, such as influenza. As a reminder, in the last severe flu season, 2017, around 4400 people died from this infection in Austria. Sooner or later, a Corona wave and a flu wave together will almost certainly overload hospitals, especially if nurses and doctors also fall ill.

It is now time to act on one’s responsibility: those who only wear the mask when it is (again) obligatory have not understood that it can prevent many infections, hospital stays, and long-covid cases with little effort.
