Green passport – what you need to know for the next few weeks

A year ago, the Green Pass was required to enter a restaurant. Nowadays, (almost) no one thinks about the app.

For thousands of Austrians, the vaccination certificate – and thus the validity of the Green Passport – will soon expire. Only those who have been sufficiently immunized or vaccinated will continue to have the app.

While the Green Pass was the key to almost every leisure activity a year ago – from going to a restaurant to traveling abroad – today, most people don’t even think about it.

Yet the proof has not entirely lost its purpose: “Wherever the 3G rule still applies, the Green Pass is still required,” says the Ministry of Social Affairs. And that would be the case in vulnerable areas, such as hospitals, care facilities, or retirement homes.

In other areas, however, access restrictions are unlikely to return anytime soon. “We are currently in Scenario 2 of the Variant Management Plan; here, the use of the green pass in other areas is not yet envisaged.” This would only play in Scenario 3 if the coronavirus again evolves into a variant that is immediately contagious, leading to increased severe courses. But this is unlikely to be the case with the rampant omicron offspring.
