For a long time, the streaming service’s bosses had vowed never to run ads. Now the low-cost advertising subscription launches on November 1 in twelve countries.
Netflix is newly introducing a subscription with advertising breaks. The offer will be launched in twelve countries from November 1, but Austria is not yet among them for the time being. The subscription will be available next month in Germany and will cost 4.99 euros per month. Those who opt for the low-priced subscription must endure four to five minutes of advertising per hour. In addition, the video quality is lower than with the other subscriptions, and downloads are impossible.
For all existing users, however, Netflix gives the all-clear: They can continue enjoying the streaming offer ad-free. “There are no changes for subscriptions and memberships that are already running. The basic subscription with advertising complements our existing ad-free basic, standard, and premium subscriptions,” Netflix announced in Thursday’s message.
Netflix has recently come under massive pressure. While competitors such as Disney are hot on the provider’s heels and continue to grow, Netflix lost nearly one million users between April and June this year, as reported by the Tages-Anzeiger. Until not so long ago, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings had also assured users that Netflix would never run ads. Now the streaming service has introduced the advertising subscription just six months after the initial announcement.
