Apple has confirmed to launch of an iPhone equipped with USB-C. However, the company is not happy about this. When the Wall Street Journal asked if Apple would replace the Lightning connector, Apple’s marketing chief Greg Joswiak replied, “Of course, we have to comply. We don’t have a choice.”

Because: the European Union is now mandating that all phones sold in its member countries use this connector if they have a physical charger.

Not happy about change compulsion
Asked when to expect USB-C on the iPhone, Joswiak replied, “The Europeans are the ones dictating the timing to European customers.” Currently, at any rate, the law dictates that all cell phones and tablets must use USB-C by the fall of 2024.

It’s unclear whether USB-C-equipped iPhones will be sold outside the EU – Joswiak didn’t comment on that. However, he clarified that Apple is not happy about being legally forced to make the switch.
