The trace element zinc has been used for decades to treat colds, and clinical studies have proved its effectiveness. It also helps heal wounds, produces hormones or sperm, and is suitable for skin, hair, and nails. Several studies have shown that zinc can be used very successfully in preventing and treating colds when administered within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms. However, there is very little information on the role and effect of zinc in coronavirus disease.
A new study has now linked orally administered zinc to reduced severity and duration of SARS-CoV-2 infections. It was published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases. Four hundred seventy people with moderate corona infection were included in the study. Of these, 231 patients were given 25mg zinc tablets twice daily for 15 days, and 239 subjects received a placebo. The study was conducted in several health centers in Tunisia.
Those patients who took oral zinc twice daily for 15 days were 42 percent less likely to die and be admitted to the intensive care unit (30-day mortality was 6.5 percent in the zinc group and 9.2 percent in the placebo group). In addition, hospital stays and duration of illness were shorter, the researchers reported.
