By 2030, the United Nations wanted to eliminate AIDS. But the number of new HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths is rising in some parts of the world. Inequalities are the main reason for the lack of progress, the U.N. Program to Fight AIDS (UNAIDS) said in an analysis for today’s World AIDS Day.

Around 9,000 were infected in Austria
Worldwide, 38.4 million people are living with HIV infection, and there are about 9,000 infected people in Austria. Three hundred seventy-six more people in Austria were infected with the virus last year. Aids Hilfe calls for more attention and sees an urgent need for action.

According to Aids Hilfe Vienna, HIV is still strongly taboo in society. Aids Hilfe Tirol pointed out that the number of HIV infections has remained constant in recent years, while other sexually transmitted diseases have increased by a third. Therefore, sexual health must be thought of in a broader context.

Thanks to suitable therapies, infected people can now grow old with HIV in their blood. Experts say the most important thing is to detect the infection as early as possible.
