The situation in outpatient clinics and pediatric practices, and hospitals is alarming. The pediatric clinic in Graz only accepts emergency cases. Inpatients already have to use gangway beds. Even 29 children requiring oxygen in Graz have been transferred to regular wards. Almost 500 children in the outpatient department on the weekend were admitted.
Three viruses are rolling through Austria at once: RSV, influenza, and Corona. Covid is at the same activity level, with about 5,000 new cases daily. Now RS viruses and influenza dominate. The two waves are hitting Covid with full force: “The triple wave is here,” says virologist Monika Redlberger-Fritz of MedUni Vienna. Children up to four, in particular, are highly affected, are increasingly being admitted to hospitals, and must be hospitalized.
Extremely affected: Children from infant to 4 years
For the most part, they need help breathing. According to AGES, there were 6,126 new cases of infection in infants and young children last week. The RSV(respiratory syncytial) virus affects the upper and lower respiratory tract, triggering fever and respiratory distress, especially in infants and young children, as the respiratory tract becomes slimy. Experts believe that the high number of
RS virus infections in infants could also be due to the lower immunity of “Corona” babies.
At the clinic in Vienna-Favoriten, there is now no free capacity for infants who contracted RSV. The same applies to the pediatric department at AKH. The situation at the clinics in Floridsdorf and Donaustadt has eased slightly.
