The top 10 search terms of the year in Austria were “Ukraine,” “Corona vaccination near me,” “World Cup,” “Olympics,” Dominic Thiem,” “federal presidential election,” “monkeypox,” “Vladimir Putin,” “Russia” and “climate change.” Second on the podium behind tennis star Thiem among the much sought-after domestic celebrities, was Olympic snowboarding champion, Anna Gasser.

One trend was queried on climate, environment, and energy, the most frequent searches here being for “climate change,” “climate bonus,” “fuel price calculator,” “Wien Energie,” and “EVN.” “Energy cost compensation” and “electricity price brake” managed ninth and tenth place.

Coronavirus remains an important topic
Covid-19 remained an important topic, but in contrast to 2021, the term “corona” no longer topped the list; instead, the search was for the vaccination. The top five spots include “Corona vaccination near me,” “mandatory vaccination,” “Valneva stock,” “green passport,” and “Omikron symptoms.”

Among the news, the federal presidential election registered the most substantial increase in search queries, the Google Austria spokesperson reported. In addition to “cold progression” and “ragweed,” “referendum” also made it to the top spot.

The top 10 international people in 2022 were a colorful mix of personalities from politics, sports, and culture. Russian President Vladimir Putin topped the list, followed by tennis ace Novak Djokovic and Hollywood ex-couple Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. Searches for Will Smith and Chris Rock represent the Scandal slap at the Oscars night.

“How long is a PCR test valid?”, “What is NATO`?”
“How questions” are a category of their own, with “How long is a PCR test valid?” dominating ahead of “How old is Putin?” and “How long is considered recovered?” Corona was also at the top of the list of “what questions”: “Corona positive – what to do?” came before “What is NATO?” and the climate bonus, mainly because users had not yet received it.

A “best of” was presented from all the searches formulated as questions, including “Why am I so tired?” which is a popular question in the morning. Many people also wanted to know where the Leaning Tower of Pisa is located and why they don’t get a Corona. “Why were fake lashes invented?” also made it into the ranking.

Google creates the “Year in Search” trends based on more than a trillion search queries processed yearly. All the categories presented include Austria’s “most trending searches,” i.e., those search terms that have increased the most compared to the previous year.
