Around 400,000 Christmas trees are sold in Vienna during the Christmas season. Starting Monday, you can buy your Christmas tree at one of Vienna’s 264 markets.
Five tips for buying a sustainable Christmas tree
The 2022 Christmas tree sale gets underway on December 12 at 264 locations in Vienna, from 8 a.m. to a maximum of 8 p.m. daily. “With the multitude of possible Christmas tree marketplaces existing in Vienna, it is guaranteed by the Market Office that sufficient trees can be offered for all Viennese*. The demand coverage is in any case secured,” emphasizes Marktamt Director Andreas Kutheil. The Market Office regulates the annual space allocation at the Christmas tree marketplaces and controls the pricing and compliance with the approved stand size.
The selection of trees ranges from domestic fir to Danish spruce. In Vienna, the fir is preferred because of its intense color and relatively dull needles. Christmas trees on the Viennese stands are mainly trees offered directly from domestic producers. For a domestic fir, you can expect between 10 and 35 euros per meter; blue spruce can be had between 10 and 25 euros.
Tip for a crisp green Christmas tree on Christmas Eve
A tip to ensure that the Christmas tree is crisp green on Christmas Eve: the coniferous tree should be stored outdoors after purchase, if possible, or purchased just before December 24 and placed in a container with water. Those who use real candles should light them only in the first few days and never leave the tree unattended, as experience shows that the risk of fire is very high.
