Not quite that much snow has fallen: Nevertheless, low-pressure Birgit brought fresh snow to many places overnight and covered roofs, meadows, and vehicles in Vienna. Icy times are ahead of us in the coming days, and freezing rain in the middle of the week could also become dangerous.
So cold as not yet this winter
Weather calming now follows in terms of precipitation, but thick gloves, lined shoes, hood, and scarf should be brought out now at the latest – because it will be so cold in the coming nights as in this fall and winter.
In the Danube region, in the east and southeast, temperatures will mostly drop to minus five to minus ten degrees, according to Unwetterzentrale. There are severe night frosts in the Alps with minus ten to minus 20 degrees. “In the typical high valleys of Tyrol and Salzburg, such as in Lungau or Defereggen valley, even lows just below the minus-20-degree mark are possible.” But not too much should be expected during the day either: It will remain frosty, with temperatures most likely to reach just below freezing.
Attention danger of icy roads!
Noticeably warmer prospects will not bring us the rest of the week. Instead, in the middle of the week, from Vorarlberg to the eastern lowlands, there is a high risk of slippery conditions due to freezing rain, according to the warning of the Severe Weather Center. Towards the weekend, the next portion of snow could follow.
