In times of energy crisis, it makes sense to look for power guzzlers, switches them off or replace them with more economical appliances. Even standby mode does not guarantee that electrical appliances do not consume electricity – on the contrary. Many electronic everyday helpers can also be disconnected from the power supply at night and thus save money. You can learn more about which devices to use and other electricity-saving tips here.
Vent heaters: a unique key can be used to let excess air out of the radiator, leaving more space for water, which is then heated and can efficiently heat the room.
Accurately adjust heating pump: Many heating pumps are set to the highest setting and consume unnecessary electricity. The power can be adjusted with a switch to suit your needs. The lowest level is often sufficient if you have an apartment on one floor or a small house.
Turn off standby: If you don’t want to unplug every appliance, a multi-outlet power strip with a power button is recommended. This way, you avoid the energy-intensive standby mode and save a lot of money.
Use the right size for refrigerators and freezers: Since these appliances are used around the clock, both size and energy efficiency are crucial. A single household should, therefore, not choose a giant machine when buying a new one, as large appliances consume more power than small electrical appliances.
Fully load the washing machine: Especially with old models, it makes sense to load the device fully since they do not have automatic volume control and thus, less energy, water and wastewater is consumed.
Select low water temperature: Modern detergents mean it is no longer necessary to wash at 90 degrees. Even heavily soiled laundry gets clean at 60 degrees. In most cases, 40 degrees is sufficient. This is not only better for textiles but also better for your wallet.
Use eco programs: Although these take longer, they save electricity and water in the long run.
Do not use the tumble dryer in summer: The sun and wind allow clothes to dry without using extra energy.
Cook with a lid: If you use a cover when cooking and roasting, it usually goes faster and uses 30 percent less electricity.
Bake without preheating and use the residual heat: For most dishes, it’s enough to turn on the oven when you put them in. You can also turn them off earlier, as the residual heat lasts for a few minutes, saving energy.
Reduce the brightness on the TV: large TVs also consume a lot of energy. To save it, you can reduce the brightness and contrast a bit without sacrificing good picture quality.
These investments pay off after a short time:
Use an energy-saving shower head: For about 25 euros, you can get an economy shower head that will save you about half on energy and water costs.
Buy thermal curtains: In rented apartments, you don’t have much influence on the insulation of the apartment. That’s why thermal curtains are a great way to insulate the apartment and save some energy.
Efficient lighting saves a lot of energy: The famous energy-saving lamp with uncomfortable light is long outdated. Modern LED lighting is much more efficient, even with lower wattage.
