On January 31, the current vignette year ends. This means: From February 1, only Vignette 2023 in purple or Digital Vignette 2023 are valid. For all those who still have to click or pick, it is therefore high time to get the vignette. “67 percent of all annual vignettes are already digital. The trend towards digital continues unabated. So if you don’t have a current vignette yet, you can get one at the toll store or via the ASFINAG app. Or get a vignette in time at one of our 6,000 sales points in Austria and abroad,” confirms ASFINAG Managing Director Claudia Eder.
Many now rely on the subscription service, which automatically extends the annual vignette without any further action on the part of the customer. However, those who buy online must still observe the consumer protection period. A vignette purchased in the ASFINAG toll store is only valid on the 18th day after purchase.
Important to note: For entrepreneurs, the digital vignette is valid immediately, even when purchased online in the toll store and ASFINAG app. By the way: Only in the ASFINAG Mautshop is it guaranteed online that the legally fixed minimum amount has to be paid. For this reason, ASFINAG appeals to pay close attention to the provider when purchasing online and to buy the vignette exclusively in the ASFINAG Mautshop.
However, anyone who wants to use the digital vignette as early as February 1 can obtain it from ASFINAG sales partners such as ÖAMTC, ARBÖ, ADAC, as well as at many tobacconists and gas stations. In addition, the Digital Vignette, which is valid immediately, is also available at the six ASFINAG toll booths and at more than 70 vending machines throughout Austria. Digital vignettes purchased there are reasonable immediately.
During a toll sticker check by the ASFINAG Service and Control Service, it is determined that no valid toll sticker is affixed to the windshield or that no valid digital toll sticker is present. In that case, a replacement toll must be paid to the ASFINAG toll supervisory bodies immediately on site. For multi-lane vehicles such as passenger cars, the replacement toll is 120 euros, and for single-lane vehicles, 65 euros. This applies if an Automatic Vignette Control detects a vehicle driving without a valid vignette.
During toll inspections, the ASFINAG toll supervisors repeatedly discover that drivers can be very creative in explaining why they have not affixed a valid toll sticker to their windshield at the time of the toll inspection. Many excuses are brought into play – from the classic reason “stuck the toll sticker on a wine bottle as a present” to the often quoted “my dog ate the toll sticker.” However, excuses or ignorance do not protect against a replacement toll.
