Wiener Linien is using the semester break and weekends for important modernizations. This involves renewing around 1,000 meters of streetcar tracks in Vienna.
Since 2014, Vienna’s oldest subway line, the U4, has been undergoing extensive refurbishment. So far, signal boxes have already been replaced, tracks and track beds renewed, and stations and tunnel ceilings refurbished. Wiener Linien is taking advantage of the Vienna semester vacations to renew several 43-year-old points along the line, including wooden sleepers. For this reason, the U4 will not be able to run between Karlsplatz and Landstraße/Wien Mitte stations from Saturday, February 4, to Sunday, February 12, the end of operations.
Wiener Linien renew the tracks between Karlsplatz and Landstraße
Wiener Linien recommends using the U1, U3, 2 and 4A lines as substitutes. Those who want fresh air can cover the distance between Karlsplatz and Landstraße/Wien Mitte on a WienMobil bike. After the semester break, the U4 will run again on the entire route in the morning from Monday, February 13 – and without a slow speed section between Karlsplatz and Landstraße.
Replacement of the light signals on Vienna’s U6 line
After more than 30 years in service, the light signals on Vienna’s U6 line are being replaced, and modern LED light points are being installed. Most of the work will take place at night without restrictions for passengers. In addition, intensive work will be carried out on three weekends:
Saturday, 28.1., approx. 00:30, up to and including Sunday, 29.1., end of operations
Saturday, 11.3., approx. 00:30, up to and including Sunday, 12.3., end of the operation
Saturday, 25.3., approx. 00:30, until Sunday, 26.3., end of service
U6 only runs between Vienna-Floridsdorf and Alterlaa
On these weekends, the Vienna U6 runs only between Floridsdorf and Alterlaa. Those who want to continue to Erlaaer Straße, Perfektastraße or Siebenhirten must change to the substitute bus U6E.
Track rehabilitation in Vienna during ongoing passenger service
Starting in February and March 2023, Wiener Linien will also begin rehabilitating approximately 1,000 meters of streetcar tracks: at Franz-Jonas-Platz for lines 25, 30, and 31, on Prager Straße for line 26, and at Schwedenplatz for lines 1 and 2. The construction work in Vienna will take place during ongoing line operations and will not affect the timetable.
