The Ministry of Finance communicates through notices delivered by mail or in the FinanzOnline Databox.
A new scam is happening now that the annual pay slips are rolling in. The Treasury Department shows an example of such a message.

The great time of the employee assessment has arrived. This is exactly what brazen fraudsters have now taken advantage of. With the help of fake SMS messages in the name of the Austrian Tax Office, they are trying to entice people to transfer a certain amount of money, warns the Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF).

[FINANZAMT] Your outstanding debt with the number 23894891 has not been paid despite several reminders. On 28 February 2023, the Finance police will seize your household goods as a precaution. You can avoid the seizure proceedings by paying the full amount immediately via your payment link. (Link)

According to the SMS, the recipients have outstanding debts to settle and therefore have to transfer an amount of 349 euros. This is the only way to avoid the threat of garnishment proceedings. Such fraud attempts could also occur via e-mail and phone calls.
