The numbers are alarming: 77 percent of Internet users are victims of cybercrime. This new crime phenomenon is becoming increasingly widespread – how can you protect yourself?
It’s so convenient to use the comforts of the Internet. Shopping from the comfort of your sofa, online banking saves you a trip to the bank or writing a quick message. However, this luxury is not without its dangers.
Anyone who is on the Internet makes themselves vulnerable. That’s because many criminals are on the Net, doing everything they can to steal our personal and sometimes even personal data. And they often do this in very tricky ways.
Cybercrime: The Internet is not a safe space
According to a survey by the industry association Bitkom, three-quarters of Internet users have already been victims of cybercrime, reports tagesschau.de. Unpleasant experiences are caused by malware, fraud when shopping online, insults on social platforms or sexual harassment.
Be on your guard on the World Wide Web.
Bitkom CEO Bernhard Rohleder makes it clear that it is important to take all necessary security measures. The minimum is secure passwords. In plain language, they should not be the name of your partner or cat. Passwords should also be changed regularly.
Furthermore, a good virus protection program should be used, and operating programs and browsers should be regularly updated. The manufacturers close in such a way current safety gaps. Also, be sparing with sharing personal data and information! It is better to think twice about whether providing such information is necessary.
A legal vacuum?
However, very few assaults and crimes on the Internet are reported to the police. Even sexual harassment, serious insults and fraud often go unpunished. The approaches of those affected vary. A third ignore the incidents. Half seek to talk to friends and acquaintances.
Half of the users who experience cybercrime inform their bank, social media service or e-mail provider about what has happened. Only 18 percent report the crime. This almost gives the impression that the Internet is a lawless space. But this is not the case!
Important: Report cybercrime to the police
Such things can be curbed only if criminal activities are investigated, and the perpetrators are punished. That’s why no one should get away with cybercrime. Every local police station takes down reports.
