Austria can look forward to temperatures of up to 23 degrees in the coming days – but that will be over by the weekend at the latest.

At the front of a powerful low-pressure complex near the British Isles, the flow in the Alpine region turns to the southwest, bringing in very warm air masses of Mediterranean origin. The calm spring weather continues up to and including Thursday; on Friday, a cold front introduces a more unsettled and significantly cooler weather phase.

Wednesday will offer a mostly nice mix of sun and clouds, with denser clouds in the country’s eastern half. However, it will remain dry from early morning on, and the sun will also prevail in the morning. In the evening, compact clouds will move through again in the west but remain harmless for now. With generally light winds, temperatures will rise to between 16 and 22 degrees.

On Thursday, clouds will predominate from Vorarlberg to the Waldviertel, but mostly it will remain dry, and at least occasionally, the sun will show. On the other hand, it often goes through the day friendly with extensive but harmless veil clouds in the east and south. The wind continues to play no role, and with 16 to 22 degrees, the spring weather continues.

Friday will start mostly still dry, but on the northern side of the Alps, it will move in from the west, and from late morning, showery rain will spread from Vorarlberg to Upper Austria. In the afternoon, showers and thunderstorms will also fall in the east and south, which had previously been frequently sunny. On the northern side of the Alps, a brisk westerly wind will pick up during the day and a strong westerly wind in the east in the evening. From west to southeast, highs will range between 12 and 23 degrees.

On Saturday, more rain showers will fall in the mountains and the south, and thunderstorms can be expected during the day. It will largely dry away from the Alps, especially in the Danube region and the eastern lowlands, with sunny spells. The wind will blow briskly in the north and east, on the eastern edge of the Alps also strongly from west to northwest. Temperatures will reach a maximum of 11 to 18 degrees.
