Everyone has heard the 10,000 steps per day rule. But how many steps should we walk every day for our health? Here’s how to find the answer.

Office jobs, trips by car and evenings on the sofa: we are quite comfortable in our everyday lives. As studies show, however, we should actively counteract this. But how many steps should we walk every day for our health?

The value of 10,000 steps per day is not based on scientific research results but on the marketing campaign of a Japanese pedometer manufacturer. According to a study published in the International Journal of Obesity, 10,000 steps is too few.

25 minutes of intensive training is the minimum amount of exercise
You should take at least 15,000 steps a day. That’s equivalent to about two hours of brisk walking. The problem: How many steps we walk is difficult to measure in practice. While there are fitness wristbands and tracking functions on cell phones, they are far from reliable. According to New Scientist magazine, 10,000 steps measured by the fitness tracker correspond to an average of only 3,000. It is, therefore, more helpful to focus not on the number of steps in everyday life but on the length and intensity of the workout. Twenty-five minutes of intensive training per day is the minimum.
