The pollen season starts with a less pleasant side effect, especially for allergy sufferers: the eyes water and itch unpleasantly. However, researchers are now sounding the alarm about these symptoms because they could also be signs of a particular disease.

The uncomfortable tearing and itching of the eyes is, especially for allergy sufferers: inside, a sure sign that the pollen season has begun again. With the first warmer temperatures of the year, plants release millions of tiny seeds that fly through the air – and, unfortunately, land in your nose and eyes, where they can trigger such reactions, as the site klarify explains.

Experts, however, now warn that these symptoms can also indicate something completely different – namely a corona infection, as reported by t-online and Merkur. A sub-variant of the Omicron variant is spreading in some parts of the world – also known as “Arcturus.” Conjunctivitis could now be an accompanying symptom, according to the latest findings.

New corona symptom in children
Merkur reports that the Corona variant, officially called XBB.1.16, first appeared in Germany in early April. However, “Arcturus” infections are also increasing dramatically in the United States. However, the variant seems to be spreading remarkably quickly in India.

As Indian Corona expert Vipin Vashishtha announced on Twitter, according to Merkur and t-online, there is also an increased incidence of “itchy conjunctivitis with sticky eyes” there, which could be linked to the new Corona variant. This symptom is said to be particularly common in children.

The “Arcturus” variant is not clesserous as other Corona variants. However, since the infection figures are increasing, the WHO has placed the XBB.1.16 variant on its watch list, as Merkur and t-online report. Also, a new booster vaccination has not yet been advised.
