Can you blindly trust the automatic speed limit display?

How fast are you allowed to drive? Finding your way through the forest of signs is not always easy. Especially when you’re driving in unfamiliar terrain. You don’t want to go too fast or too slow. The fact that the speed limit for cars is now shown on the navigation system or on the display is therefore a very practical thing. But what if the displayed number is not always correct?

According to Sebastian Obrecht, spokesman for ARBÖ, “In the past, navigation devices in the vehicle had to be updated frequently; this happens or did not happen automatically.” This means that with older navigation devices, the speeds may not be up to date because the last map update was a long time ago or is no longer possible. Obrecht: “Then the current speeds at the last map update are displayed. In the case of changed or new speed limits, or even roadworks, the navigation system doesn’t know the new speeds and displays the speed that is not current.”

It’s different with modern cars: new vehicles update automatically and regularly, so the maps and speed displays are always up-to-date. Says Obrecht, “As a result, detours or the like are often displayed. In addition, many new cars also have traffic sign recognition, which means the current speed is displayed.”

But here, too, you have to be careful. For example, there are often speed limits for trucks. But the license plate recognition system can’t always read this – that is, the additional sign that the speed limit applies only to trucks – so that’s another possible reason that an incorrect speed limit is displayed.

And so good: technology is good, checking the signs with your eyes is even better.
