Vienna police warn of a dangerous and reckless burglary scam. Unknown persons use acid on doors, which injures residents.
For months, the Vienna Provincial Criminal Police Office has been investigating several burglaries throughout the city, in which the as-yet-unknown perpetrators use corrosive acid to access apartments. The most recent such burglaries occurred in Leopoldstadt, Brigittenau and Floridsdorf, according to the Vienna Provincial Police Directorate.
Due to the high level of danger, police are issuing a warning to the entire population and are asking for special attention: “If you find any damage to the lock on your front door, as well as a liquid, avoid contact with the liquid at all costs,” detectives said.
According to investigating officials, nitric acid may have a corrosive effect on the skin, respiratory tract and mucous membranes. Nitric acid is a colorless liquid but is noticeable for its pungent odor. In high concentrations, contact with the acid can even cause the skin and fingers to die.
“If accidental contact with the liquid has already occurred, immediately neutralize the body part with clean water. Do not use soap or other additives in the process. Immediately notify the police at 133!” warns the Vienna Regional Police Directorate on Saturday.
