Austria is experiencing the highest wave since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. At least, that’s the alarming call from microbiologist Ulrich Elling. A look at the wastewater monitoring confirms this. The curve has reached its highest point since measurements began. At the same time, the protein corona vaccine from Novavax, adapted to the Omicron variant XBB.1.5, has now reached Austria.
XBB.1.5 and its offspring are currently among the most prevalent variants in Austria and are responsible for around 800 hospitalizations throughout Austria. The vaccine will be available from all doctors and at various vaccination centers.
As with all other coronavirus vaccinations, this one is recommended primarily for people over the age of 60, the chronically ill, pregnant women, and healthcare staff. A total of 175,000 doses are available, according to the Ministry of Health. 325,000 doses of the adapted mRNA vaccines have already been administered since the beginning of September.
