Socks make it easier to fall asleep, but it’s better not to wear them when you sleep so that your body can regulate its temperature. Find out why here!

Should you sleep with socks on your feet? This question divides opinion and leads to differences of opinion among experts. Each side has its own arguments.

The benefits of wearing socks when sleeping
According to a study conducted by two South Korean academics, wearing socks, which can be easily cleaned with a trick, leads to better sleep at night.

The study on six volunteers found that those who wore socks to bed fell asleep on average 7.5 minutes earlier. The quality of sleep was also better: the test subjects woke up less often and slept longer (the wrong sleeping position, on the other hand, can lead to back problems).

This is because we lose most of our body heat through our extremities. So if your feet are uncovered when you go to bed or at night, you will feel cold more quickly.

As warmth promotes blood circulation, the blood vessels dilate, allowing you to fall asleep optimally and quickly. If you are cold when you go to bed, it is more difficult to warm up and fall asleep (which is why you can leave the window closed when you sleep).

Why do you have to take your socks off before bed?
According to Alexandre Aranda, a neurologist and sleep doctor quoted by Madame Figaro, it’s better to sleep without socks and stretch your feet out of bed to maintain a comfortable temperature. When falling asleep, the body naturally regulates its internal temperature. Socks that are not breathable would block this system and prevent the cold-sensitive extremities from warming up properly or, conversely, dissipating heat.

In addition, the body lowers the general body temperature to sleep well. Having socks on your feet all the time, plus a comforter, a plaid, and possibly a cat snuggled up to you – although this is pleasant when you slip into the comforter and helps you to relax as you fall asleep, it is far too much for the rest of the night, when your whole body is running on low heat.

Although socks help us fall asleep at bedtime because they protect us from the unpleasant cold, they also prevent the body from regulating itself naturally at night. Too bad for anyone who complains about cold feet. The solution? Put on socks 30 to 90 minutes before bed and sleep with your feet out of bed. It’s very simple! Then, all that remains is to find the right position.
