The switch to bicycles is rewarded. Up to 900 subsidies are available for e-bikes, transport, and folding bikes with and without electric drive. Private individuals, companies, clubs, and municipalities can apply for funding again starting April 2 at www.umweltfoerderung.at. This also applies to bikes purchased in March.
The subsidy for bicycles with and without electric drive and e-bikes is entering the next round. Last year, almost 10,000 bicycles were subsidized.
In the previous year, the Ministry of Climate Protection promoted the purchase of (electric) bicycles in cooperation with Austrian sports retailers. Compared to 2023, the BMK increased the federal subsidy by 50 euros. The maximum funding for (electric) transport bikes this year is 900 euros; for (electric) folding bikes, it is 500 euros. In addition, companies and municipalities are encouraged to purchase at least five e-bikes. Up to 300 euros are available per bike. According to the BMK website, federal funding is capped at 30 percent or 50 per cent (for private individuals) of the eligible costs. This is reduced accordingly for inexpensive bicycles.
Almost 10,000 bikes were funded in the previous year
In 2023, almost 10,000 bicycles were subsidized throughout Austria, including 3,774 e-bikes, 3303 e-transport bikes, and 2,522 e-folding bikes. “Bicycle funding is accelerating the necessary mobility transition—almost 10,000 subsidized bicycles and more than 4.5 million euros in federal funding last year alone speak for themselves. Applications for funding can now be submitted again starting April 2, and we expect demand for climate-friendly mobility to remain high,” says Climate and Energy Fund Managing Director Bernd Vogl.
