The scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated: according to the police, unknown persons have gained remote access to the laptop of a 67-year-old man from Klagenfurt. They deceived him by pretending to be an employee of a software company. The criminals claimed that installing protection software could prevent damage to the laptop’s software. To do this, they displayed a pop-up on the Klagenfurt resident’s desktop with a telephone number and the information that the laptop was at risk of data loss.
Fake software employees
The man from Klagenfurt tried to call the number and was contacted shortly afterward by another telephone number. The as-yet-unknown perpetrators already had full control of the laptop and pretended to be software employees offering an update subscription.
The man from Klagenfurt then transferred several thousand euros to an Irish bank account. The unknown perpetrators started a program on the victim’s laptop and instructed him to leave the computer running for one hour. After the time had elapsed, the unknown perpetrators assured him the laptop was OK. Shortly afterward, the man from Klagenfurt became skeptical and contacted his bank. However, reversing the transferred amount was no longer possible, which is why the man filed a complaint.
