While there is flooding in the south of Austria, the east has been waiting for rain for a long time. The drought is now having its first consequences.
Anyone thinking of having a barbecue these days – for example on the Danube Island – will unfortunately have to change their plans. This is because the City of Vienna issued a ban on barbecues with immediate effect on Tuesday afternoon, which will be strictly enforced.

Smoking, barbecuing and handling open fires in the forest and in the immediate vicinity of the forest is therefore prohibited. The reason for this is the lack of sustained rainfall, which has dried out the meadows and forests in Vienna.
Due to the potential risk of forest fires, a ban on barbecues has also been imposed on all public barbecue areas in the city. Smoking in the forest is also prohibited.
Acute danger of forest fires”
“Due to the extreme drought, the risk of forest fires is particularly acute, which is why we are appealing to the public to adhere to this ban so as not to endanger anyone,” emphasizes Climate City Councillor Jürgen Czernohorszky. It applies until further notice and will only be lifted again in the event of sustained rain showers.
“If you discover a forest fire during a walk, please call the fire department immediately on the emergency number 122”, asks Deputy Forest Director Herbert Weidinger for the help of the Viennese population. Barbecuing in private gardens outside the danger zone of the forest is permitted. However, the City of Vienna is urging people to exercise particular caution in view of the drought.

The ban will remain in place for the time being until sustained rainfall occurs.
