After several days of cycling through the picturesque landscapes of Upper Austria, our final leg from Kasten to Linz marked the climax of an unforgettable adventure. Covering around 80 kilometers, this stretch was a test of endurance and a celebration of the 433,25 kilometers we had already conquered over the past five days.
The Journey Begins: Kasten to Schlögen
We set off from Kasten with the familiar feeling of excitement and a touch of melancholy, knowing this was the last leg of our journey. The weather was perfect for cycling, with a gentle breeze accompanying us along the Danube River.
As we pedaled through the serene countryside, we soon approached one of the most renowned natural wonders along the Danube: the Schlögener Schlinge. This meander in the river, known for its dramatic loop, creates a breathtaking island-like formation. Unfortunately, our route didn’t allow us to hike up and see the view from above, but even from the trail, the sight was awe-inspiring.
Lunch in Aschach an der Donau
After covering a significant distance, we reached Aschach an der Donau, a charming riverside town that provided the perfect spot for a lunch break. The town’s historic architecture and peaceful atmosphere offered a welcome respite. We enjoyed a hearty meal, refueling our bodies for the final push towards Linz. The locals were friendly, and the sight of other cyclists passing by added to the camaraderie of the Danube Bike Trail.
The Challenge: A Roadblock and a Ferry Ride
With about 30 kilometers left, we resumed our journey, energized and ready for the last stretch. However, the road ahead soon presented an unexpected challenge—a closure that prevented us from proceeding along our planned route. But as often happens on such trips, a twist in the tale led to a new experience.
A nearby ferry was our solution, transporting us across the Danube to the other side, where we rejoined the bike trail. The ferry ride, though brief, was a delightful change of pace, offering a different perspective of the river and its surroundings. It was a reminder of the many surprises that travel can bring and how sometimes the detours make the journey all the more memorable.
The Final Stretch: Reaching Linz
The last 30 kilometers were both exhilarating and challenging. The anticipation of reaching Linz kept our spirits high, even as our legs began to tire. The closer we got, the more the landscape transitioned from rural tranquility to the urban vibe of Linz.
Finally, we arrived in Linz after nearly seven hours of cycling, including breaks to rest and take in the scenery. The sense of accomplishment was overwhelming. We had done it—433,25 kilometers in five days, a journey that tested our limits and rewarded us with unforgettable memories.
A Well-Deserved Reward
To celebrate our achievement, we treated ourselves to two local specialties: a cold Linzer beer and a slice of Linzer Torte. The sweetness of the torte and the refreshing taste of the beer was the perfect way to cap off our journey.
As we sat there, savoring our rewards, the reality of the journey’s end began to sink in. My companion, my trusted partner throughout this adventure, planned to continue his journey from Linz to Melk. Meanwhile, I bid him farewell and prepared for my train ride back to Vienna.
Reflection on a Memorable Journey
Looking back, this road trip was more than just a physical challenge; it was a journey filled with moments of awe, discovery, and camaraderie. From the breathtaking views of the Danube to the unexpected ferry ride, every part of the journey added to the rich tapestry of memories. It was an experience I will carry with me for a long time, a testament to the joy of exploring the world on two wheels.
As I boarded the train back to Vienna, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of emotions—gratitude for the experience, sadness at its conclusion, and excitement for whatever adventure might come next.
