iPhone 16: The new one can do a lot, but no AI function in the EU

Apple boss Tim Cook presented the new iPhone 16 on Monday. There are four versions; the most expensive, with 1 terabyte of memory, costs almost 2,000 euros.

Pre-orders are already underway—ironically, since Friday the 13th. The new iPhone 16 will be available in the EU from September 20.

But without AI function
“Apple Intelligence” was praised as the biggest innovation—with a smarter Siri, text tools that can make an email friendlier and more business-like, and even impressive photo manipulation. But precisely, this AI is not coming to the EU. “Because of the strict regulation,” says Apple. It’s all about the DMA digital law.

iPhone is still Apple’s cash cow
Fine. In a legal dispute with the EU, Apple has just had to pay Ireland 13 billion euros in back taxes. This was decided by the European Court of Justice. The EU Commission had filed a lawsuit because Ireland had demanded too little tax. It is incomprehensible why the money did not flow directly into the EU budget but to Ireland, which lured Apple to the island with the tax gift.

Rain of money. In the second quarter of 2024, Apple generated sales of 39 billion dollars (35.13 billion euros) with its iPhones, corresponding to around 60% of total group sales. Its biggest competitor is global market leader Samsung from South Korea. And Chinese competitor Huawei launched its foldable phone “Mate XT” just hours after the Apple keynote.

The watch, which starts at 799 euros, is available in polished titanium in “space quality” and with a mega display.

The Apple Watch will have a larger display and be noticeably thinner. A more powerful new chip will enable the Apple Watch Series 10 to display selected information automatically when needed.

A new function for the Apple Watch is the detection of sleep apnea – a condition in which breathing can stop for a short time.

Computer watch has been running since 2015
So that the watch can be worn longer, 30 minutes of charging time should fill the battery to 80 percent. Apple introduced the computer watch ten years ago and launched it on the market in the spring of 2015. Since then, the Apple Watch has led the market and is the basis for the company’s fitness business. The third version of the larger Apple Watch Ultra will primarily feature improvements on the inside.

The watch is connected to the Apple iPhone via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, and the new iPhone 16 has a special button: the Action button, a side button that can be assigned many functions, including entire shortcuts.
