A new survey shows the average amount Austrians pay for their homes. Once again, this amount has increased significantly.
“Apartment rents have continued to rise in the third quarter,” says Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas. The authority has surveyed current residential rents, including operating costs, and again recorded an increase.
The average for one of the 1.8 million central rental apartments is 658.5 euros, corresponding to a price per square meter of 9.90 euros. This figure increased by 4.2 percent compared to the previous year and 1.0 percent compared to the last quarter.
“However, the actual monthly rent depends on the rental segment, the rental period, the size of the apartment, and the region. Especially in households with people aged 60 and over, the rent per square meter is often lower due to the longer rental period,” explains Thomas.
Specifically, in the 551,500 main rental apartments with at least one person aged 60 or over, the average rent, including operating costs, is EUR 8.3 per square meter. If everyone is under 60, the average rent is 10.6 euros. Older people also live, on average, in a nine-square-meter larger apartment.
