Many people assume their dental hygiene is under control, but small mistakes can easily creep into everyday life.

How you use and care for your toothbrush can greatly impact your oral hygiene—and experts have clear recommendations. The Huffington Post reports.

Electric toothbrush

Did you know that you shouldn’t “scrub” your teeth with an electric toothbrush? Instead, the brush head should glide gently over each tooth without moving it up, down, or sideways. According to experts, there is a risk of damaging the bristles and reducing the toothbrush’s effectiveness if too much pressure is applied.

Changing your toothbrush

According to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, you should replace your toothbrush or the brush head of your electric toothbrush every three to four months. Healthline recommends changing electric toothbrush heads every 12 weeks, especially if you brush with heavy pressure.

“The brush is designed to get between the teeth. Too much pressure flattens the bristles, causing them to lose their effectiveness,” explains toothbrush manufacturer Philips.

A 2012 study found that worn bristles remove significantly less plaque and bacteria than a new toothbrush. Experts recommend replacing the toothbrush as soon as signs of wear are visible.

Change your toothbrush after an illness

Healthline recommends changing your toothbrush if you have had a sore throat or other infection in your mouth and throat. Trying to “disinfect” your toothbrush with mouthwash or boiling water can actually spread more bacteria.

Simply rinse the toothbrush thoroughly under running water after use for daily cleaning.

By following these simple guidelines, you can ensure that your toothbrush works optimally and contributes to healthy oral hygiene.
