Drivers are having a hard time at the moment. Cell phone parking scams are spreading, too.
For months now, criminals have been trying to make money with fake Asfinag or other vignette sales points. The scam is always the same: fraudsters copy the websites of Asfinag and Co. and thus lure their victims into the trap.
Alleged vignette purchase outrages drivers
They believe they can buy a vignette and leave their credit card details. Initially, only the price of the alleged vignette is debited, while a little later, much higher amounts are missing from their account. You cannot buy a valid vignette from these fake stores.
Numerous providers are now selling vignettes on the Internet, many of which have hidden additional costs. However, none of these sellers are authorized to sell the vignette. Asfinag is, therefore, issuing an urgent warning against these providers.
Asfinag advises: only buy vignettes from sales partners
“One thing is clear: Asfinag does not charge additional fees for vignette purchases like some online stores. In addition, more and more fake stores also cause financial damage to customers,” confirms Claudia Eder, Managing Director of Auto- und Schnellstraßenfinanzierungs AG.
In addition to the toll store at www.asfinag.at, the official sales partners offer a secure purchase at the usual price. There are no surcharges for Öamtc, Arbö, petrol stations, and tobacconists via the official toll booths and vending machines.
Asfinag warns the homepage fraudsters
Asfinag is trying to take action against these providers by issuing warnings. However, when a website closes, another site from the same provider quickly opens. Because these providers are based abroad, taking legal action against them is very difficult. One thing is clear: the resale of digital toll products is excluded in the company’s general terms of use.
So, whether it’s an unauthorized provider or a fake store, it’s essential to take a second look before purchasing or transmitting personal data to prevent damage.
