Austria is facing a change in the weather this coming weekend: After spring-like temperatures prevail on Friday, the snow line will drop significantly on Saturday, and wintry conditions will return to some regions.
The coming weekend will change the weather: According to the Geosphere forecast, a cooling trend will set in on Saturday, causing the snow line to drop to up to 500 meters above sea level. On Friday, however, spring-like weather will dominate with sunshine and a few spring clouds in the afternoon, especially in the mountains. The wind will be light to moderate, and after minus two to plus six degrees, highs will range from 14 to 22 degrees.
Spring-like weather gives way to a wintry chill at the weekend
As the sun rises on Saturday, there will be widespread sunshine throughout the country, but as the day progresses, the cold front coming from the northeast will move in and cause increasingly dense clouds. In the afternoon, rain and snow showers will continue, especially on the northern side of the Alps from Kufstein eastwards. The snow line will mainly be between 1,800 and 2,100 meters above sea level, but in the Mühlviertel and Waldviertel as well as in the south of Lower Austria, it will drop to 800 to 1,100 meters. The wind will be brisk to strong from northerly directions. Early temperatures will be between minus two and plus seven degrees and rise to between 13 and 20 degrees during the course of the day – in the north and east, it will cool down to between three and nine degrees by the evening.
While Sunday will start out sunny in the eastern half of the country, a few dense clouds will linger in the west. On the edge of the Alps, it will still rain or snow locally, with a snow line around 1,200 meters above sea level. Instead of clouds, sunny and dry weather will prevail in the west as the day progresses. In the eastern half of the country, however, the sun disappears behind the clouds, and the tendency to shower increases until evening, especially in the lowlands of the east. The wind will blow moderately to briskly along and in the lee of the northern side of the Alps, also strongly from northwest to north. Early temperatures of between minus three and plus five degrees will give way to daytime highs of two to 15 degrees, with the warmest temperatures in the west.
Sunshine and snowfall: Austria is split in two at the start of the week
A northwesterly to northerly current will dominate the weather in the eastern Alps on Monday at the start of the week. While the sun will often shine in the western parts of the country, many dense clouds will dominate further east and southeast. Apart from isolated rain showers in the eastern lowlands or on the east edge of the Alps, it should remain largely dry until the evening. The snow line will only be around 500 meters above sea level. The wind will be largely moderate but brisk in the eastern half from northwest to north. After early temperatures of between minus five and plus two degrees, highs of five to 13 degrees are expected – and once again, the west will be favored.
Austria will be under the influence of a northerly current on Tuesday, bringing a mix of sunny spells and dense clouds, which may cause rain showers in the east and southeast and snowflakes at first. The snow line will rise again and lie between 900 and 1,400 meters above sea level from east to west. The wind will be weak to moderate after minus three to plus two degrees in the morning; daytime highs of six to twelve degrees will be reached.
