The situational winter tire obligation on the roads ends on 15 April. However, there is no need to rush to change to summer tires, advises the ÖAMTC expert.
Winter tires are mandatory from 1 November.
“More important than the date is the local weather: April is known for its sudden changes in weather, and at higher altitudes, it can still get very cold in the morning,” says ÖAMTC tire expert Steffan Kerbl. He advises changing tires after the end of the situational winter tire obligation only if the temperatures remain permanently in the double-digit range.
End of the situational winter tire obligation: make tire changes dependent on local weather conditions
If the tread depth of the winter tires is just under the permitted minimum of four millimeters at the end of the season, they should no longer be used the next winter. “You can still run ‘old’ winter tires ‘to the end’ for some time and thus protect the summer tires. However, winter tires degrade significantly at the latest at summer temperatures above 25 degrees due to the soft compound – summer or all-season tires should then be fitted,” explained the mobility club technician. Using all-season tires saves you having to change them twice a year, possible tire depot fees, or having to store them in the cellar yourself. They are suitable with restrictions: “If you are mainly driving in flat areas or in urban areas and are rarely confronted with ice and snow, all-season tires are definitely an option,” said the expert.
