AHMEDABAD, INDIA – June 13, 2025 — Amid the twisted metal and thick smoke of one of India’s worst aviation disasters in decades, a miracle has emerged: one man, 40-year-old Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, walked away alive from the wreckage of Air India Flight AI171.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed just minutes after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12, carrying 242 passengers and crew. Within moments, flames engulfed the fuselage, and emergency services swarmed the scene. Officials feared the worst — and for 241 souls, the worst had come.
But from the heart of the devastation, rescue workers pulled Ramesh, seated in 11A, conscious and speaking. Miraculously, he suffered only minor injuries. He was quickly transported to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, where doctors report he is in stable condition and recovering well.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, with early reports suggesting a catastrophic mechanical failure shortly after takeoff. Black box data is being analyzed, and both Indian and international aviation authorities are involved.
For families mourning loved ones lost, Ramesh’s survival is a bittersweet glimmer of hope — an almost unexplainable exception. “It’s hard to comprehend how anyone could survive that,” said Rajiv Mehta, a local firefighter. “But there he was, alert and alive. It feels like something out of a movie.”
Ramesh, a British-Indian IT consultant visiting family in Gujarat, has not yet spoken publicly, but hospital staff describe him as calm and grateful.
In a tragedy that has stunned the nation and shaken global aviation, his survival stands as a powerful reminder of human resilience and the unfathomable mysteries that sometimes govern life and death.
