Austria is set to experience its first frosty nights of the autumn season, with temperatures expected to dip below freezing in some areas as clear skies and calm winds create ideal conditions for overnight cooling.

Cloudy conditions will linger across eastern parts of the country on Monday afternoon, while most other regions enjoy increasingly sunny weather. By evening, skies are expected to become mostly clear nationwide. A brisk wind affecting northern and eastern Austria will gradually ease during the afternoon. Daytime temperatures are forecast to reach between 12 and 18 degrees Celsius.

Frosty Temperatures on the Way

According to GeoSphere Austria, the night will be predominantly clear with only a few clouds and light winds. Shallow patches of fog may develop locally, while temperatures fall significantly. Overnight lows are expected to range from minus 2 to plus 6 degrees Celsius, bringing the first frost of the season to some locations.

Sunshine Returns on Tuesday

Any local fog that forms early Tuesday will quickly dissipate, giving way to widespread sunshine. Clouds will begin to move into western Austria around midday but are not expected to bring significant rainfall initially. By evening, isolated light showers could occur in some western regions.

Winds will remain generally light to moderate from the northwest and north. Along the main Alpine ridge west of the Tauern mountains, a strengthening foehn wind is expected. Morning temperatures will range from minus 2 to plus 6 degrees Celsius, while afternoon highs will reach between 13 and 18 degrees.

Unsettled Weather Midweek

A weather disturbance will bring a change in conditions on Wednesday, producing widespread cloud cover and light rain north of the Alpine divide as well as in northern and eastern Austria. As the day progresses, precipitation is expected to ease and sunshine will break through, particularly across western and southern regions.

Morning temperatures will range between 3 and 10 degrees Celsius, with daytime highs reaching 12 to 21 degrees. Winds will be light to moderate, blowing from the west and north.

Foggy Starts, Mild Afternoons

Thursday is expected to begin with patches of fog across the northern Alpine foothills and parts of southeastern Austria. The fog should clear during the morning, leaving a largely sunny day aside from some high cloud cover. Temperatures will start between 2 and 9 degrees Celsius before climbing to 14 to 21 degrees during the afternoon.

A similar pattern is forecast for Friday. Early morning fog is likely along the Danube region and in southern Austria, but sunshine will dominate once the fog clears. Light winds and mild conditions will prevail, with morning temperatures between 1 and 10 degrees Celsius and afternoon highs ranging from 14 to 22 degrees.

Despite the pleasant autumn afternoons expected later in the week, the sharp overnight cooling serves as a reminder that winter is drawing closer, with the season’s first widespread frost now arriving across parts of Austria.
