More than two million pensioners in Austria are set to receive a double pension payment on October 30, 2026. However, not everyone will receive the full additional amount, and some may notice a difference in their net payment due to taxes and social insurance deductions.
Vienna, Austria – Pensioners across Austria can look forward to a higher bank deposit this Friday, October 30, when the regular October pension and the second special pension payment of the year are paid together. Often referred to as the 14th pension or Christmas bonus, the additional payment is normally made in October.
The payment date has been brought forward because November 1, 2026, falls on a Sunday and is also the public holiday of All Saints’ Day. Pensions are generally paid on the first day of the following month.
Who Is Entitled to the Full Special Payment?
Under Austria’s General Social Insurance Act (ASVG), the special payment generally corresponds to the amount of the October pension. Certain supplements, including the compensatory allowance and pension bonus, may also be taken into account.
For example, a pensioner receiving a monthly gross pension of €2,000 would normally be entitled to an additional €2,000 gross, bringing the combined gross amount for October to €4,000.
However, pensioners who retired during the year may receive only a portion of the special payment.
To qualify for the full amount, pensioners generally must have received their pension continuously throughout October and the preceding five calendar months. For every calendar month without a pension payment, the special payment is reduced by one-sixth.
Someone who began receiving a pension on August 1, 2026, for example, would generally receive half of the special payment. With a monthly gross pension of €2,000, this would mean an additional €1,000 gross instead of €2,000.
Certain periods involving partial pensions or qualifying survivor’s pensions may also be considered when calculating entitlement.
Why the October Payment May Be Lower Than the April Payment
Even when the special payments made in April and October are equal in gross terms, the net amounts deposited into pensioners’ accounts may differ.
The reason lies in taxation and social insurance contributions. A six-percent health insurance contribution is deducted from the special payment. Where applicable, a preferential income tax rate of six percent is also applied to taxable special payments.
There is an annual tax-free allowance of €620 for special payments. This allowance is generally taken into account when the first special payment is made in April. As a result, it may no longer be available for the October payment.
Consequently, pensioners with the same pension amount may receive up to €37.20 less net from their October special payment than from the April payment.
For pensioners with lower incomes, both special payments may remain tax-free, depending on the applicable tax thresholds and their individual circumstances.
How Much Will Pensioners Receive on October 30?
The following figures, based on calculations published by Finanz.at for 2026, illustrate the estimated combined net payment for pensioners entitled to the full special payment.
| Monthly gross pension | Estimated combined net payment |
|---|---|
| €1,000 | €1,880.00 |
| €1,500 | €2,735.40 |
| €2,000 | €3,568.98 |
| €2,500 | €4,291.28 |
| €3,000 | €5,033.72 |
| €4,000 | €6,503.13 |
| €5,000 | €7,950.73 |

According to these calculations, pensioners receiving a monthly gross pension of around €2,100 or more may find that the special payment produces a higher net amount than their regular monthly pension. This is because special payments receive preferential tax treatment, while regular pension income is generally taxed under the standard income tax schedule.
When Will the Next Pension Be Paid?
After receiving the combined October payment, pensioners should plan for a longer interval before their next regular pension deposit.
The November pension will be paid on December 1, 2026. For many pensioners, this payment will also include a deduction for Austria’s annual e-card fee of €26.85.
Exemptions apply to certain groups, including recipients of a compensatory allowance and people exempt from prescription charges because of their low income.
The December pension will subsequently be paid on December 31, 2026. According to the Austrian Pension Insurance Institution (Pensionsversicherungsanstalt, PVA), pensioners receiving their payments in cash are scheduled to receive them on December 30.
What Pensioners Should Keep in Mind
Although the double pension payment provides additional financial support ahead of the Christmas season, the amount received will depend on individual pension entitlement, the date retirement began, applicable deductions and personal tax circumstances.
Pensioners who retired during 2026 should pay particular attention to the calculation of their special payment, as they may not qualify for the full additional amount.
For household budgeting, it is also worth remembering that the next regular pension payment will not arrive until December 1, followed by the December payment at the end of the month.
