The French government expects more than 100,000 Corona infection cases per day by the end of the year. Health Minister Olivier Véran attributed this Wednesday to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant. Omicron is likely to become the predominant variant of the coronavirus in the country between Christmas and New Year’s Day, Véran told broadcaster BMF-TV.

On Tuesday, nearly 73,000 new cases of infection were registered in France within one day, compared with an average of more than 54,000 in the preceding days. Nationwide, the proportion of people infected with the Omicron variant is 20 percent, and in the Paris area it is close to 35 percent, Health Minister Véran said. According to the calculations, however, the variant is likely to be responsible for the majority of cases as early as between Christmas and the New Year.

“Omicron is very contagious,” Véran said. “It will spread, and no country will escape it.” Government spokesman Gabriel Gabriel Attal warned that the epidemic could hit the country again with full force.

Unlike some neighboring countries, France does not have restrictions imposed specifically for the holidays. Those who want to visit restaurants, museums or other cultural institutions must already show their “health passport” and thus proof of complete vaccination, recovery or a negative Covid test.
