According to a study, infection with the Omicron variant of the coronavirus protects against infection with the Delta variant, which is considered more dangerous. Particularly with vaccinated ones, which would have infected themselves with Omicron, an improved immunity against delta developed, emerges from the investigation published on Tuesday by South African scientists.
They had looked at data from 33 vaccinated and unvaccinated people infected with Omikron in South Africa. According to the study, the neutralization of Omicron increased an average of 14-fold within 14 days, while that of Delta increased 4.4-fold. The study has not yet been reviewed by independent experts.
“The increase in neutralization of the Delta variant in individuals infected with Omicron may lead to a decreased ability of Delta to reinfect these individuals,” the researchers summarized the results of their study. That could help suppress Delta, said Alex Sigal, a professor at the Africa Health Research Institute in South Africa.
According to an earlier South African study, people infected with the Omicron variant have a lower risk of hospitalization and serious illness than those infected with Delta. However, this is partly due to the high immunity of the population, it was said at the same time restrictively.
