It is well known that face masks, which currently must be worn in designated public areas are not primarily intended to protect the wearer of the mouth and nose protection from infection. Rather, the aim is to prevent further proliferation of the virus.
“As far as effectiveness is concerned, mouth-nose protection masks and visors are to be assessed in roughly the same way”, emphasizes Prof. Dr. Hans-Peter Hutter, specialist for hygiene and microbiology from Vienna. However, if someone has to work longer with a mask, breathing is usually restricted, which can have a negative effect on performance.
Both a mouth-nose protection and a visor are useful against germs to protect fellow human.
Here the face shield has clear advantages, because you simply get more air. The expert therefore recommends: “It is better to wear a visor than to do without a mask at all or to constantly move it to breathe better. But patients with chronic lung diseases such as COPD or asthma also benefit from the visor”.
If the distance rule of 1 meter is not adhered to, for example in public transport, masks and visors are suitable.
It should be noted, however, that users of a shield could still reach with their fingers to the nose and mouth and thus transmit the virus further, so regular hand washing must be the top priority! the plexiglass can be easily cleaned with detergent, a disinfection is not necessary.
