The Friday Nightskating started already on  May 13, 2022, Friday. Since then,  from 9 p.m., 1,500 and 3,000 people skate and cycle on a new route across Vienna to demonstrate climate protection and environmentally friendly mobility.

“Friday Nightskating is probably the best-known demonstration on wheels,” said Judith Pühringer and Peter Kraus, party leaders of the Green Party Vienna, “We demand more space in the city for environmentally friendly mobility and demonstrate more climate protection. Where otherwise, day after day, thousands of cars jam before themselves, we show that climate-friendly locomotion also works without exhaust fumes and noise. We demonstrate against fossil concrete policies and old thinking, which unfortunately gains the upper hand again in Vienna. Cycling in Vienna has increased significantly in recent years.

“Fortunately, there is a growing awareness that something has to change quickly because of the climate crisis, especially in transport. Not without reason, 2000 cyclists participated in the Gürtel Bike Ride on the first Friday Night Skating in May.  The cyclists had demonstrated a good and comfortable bike path along the Gürtel.

“2000 people demonstrate contemporary mobility every Friday evening. Every week an innovative city event is fun. Each can participate, discover the nocturnal city from a different perspective, and experience a new sense of mobility, exclusively with their muscle power!” adds Peter Kraus.

The annual highlight is the ride on the highway with inline skates and bicycles – this year, planned for September 9. Last time more than 4.000 participants were on the way.

A different route is skated every Friday, but the departure is always at Heldenplatz – at 21 o’clock. Participation in Friday Night Skating is not only free but also safe – because car traffic is diverted or briefly stopped in the relevant sections for the duration of the skating tour. A separate steward service and the support of the Vienna police ensure safety. The pace is relaxed but also not too slow.

More detailed information about the respective routes is available at wien.gruene.at/skater.
