Swiss researchers have developed a nasal or oral vaccine against Corona.
The Corona vaccine, which can be administered via the nose or mouth, has been successfully tested in animal studies at the University of Basel, the university said Monday. The release said the coronaviruses modified for the vaccine could enter cells and trigger a desired immune response. However, they could not replicate in the body.
Corona vaccine also prevents infection in animal studies.
Researchers from the Department of Biomedicine at the University of Basel tested the vaccine with nasal drops in hamsters. All animals remained protected from disease, they said. In addition, the vaccination prevented unvaccinated animals from becoming infected. Another advantage cited by the university is that the vaccine can quickly adapt to new variants and viruses. It is also suitable for people who avoid novel mRNA vaccines or injections.
Testing planned in human clinical trials
The university filed a patent application for the vaccine concept developed in collaboration with RocketVax, a Basel-based company. Clinical trials in humans are to follow soon. The results will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal for independent review. They will also be accessible on a preprint server.
