In Hungary and Poland, the authorities today reported record levels of new coronavirus infections. In the past 24 hours, the virus SARS-CoV-2 has been detected in 1,322 people, the Hungarian government’s crisis team announced today. For more than two weeks now, between 700 and 1,000 new infections have been recorded daily in the country with its approximately ten million inhabitants.
The number of people dying in connection with the infection is also increasing. In the past two days, 33 people have died. The total number of deaths due to the pandemic is estimated at 798.
Experts are concerned about the fact that relatively little testing is being done. There have been 12,394 tests in the last 24 hours. According to guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO), the rate of those tested positive should not exceed five percent in order to keep the pandemic under control.
Almost 2,300 new infections in Poland
Meanwhile, for the second day in a row, more new cases were registered in Poland than at any time since the beginning of the pandemic. Today, the authorities recorded 2,292 new infections within 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health in Warsaw. With 282 cases, the main focus was on Lesser Poland in the south of the country, but the region around the capital Warsaw (246) and Pomerania in the west (228) were also severely affected. Only the day before the previous record value was recorded, it amounted to 1,967 new infections.
According to official figures, 95,773 people in Poland have been infected with SARS-CoV-2 so far. 2,570 people died in connection with the virus. Poland has about 38 million inhabitants.
