The world is poorly prepared for a global pandemic – according to UN Secretary General Guterres this is shown by the corona virus.

The coronavirus pandemic has revealed inadequate health care systems, yawning gaps in social protection, major structural inequalities within and between countries and, above all, “how poorly the world is prepared for a global pandemic”. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres drew this conclusion in a dossier published on Wednesday.

Coronavirus caused more than one million deaths
Worldwide, the pandemic has so far claimed more than one million lives and more than 30 million people have been infected, Guterres said on the occasion of “nine months since we first heard about Covid-19. He said there were worrying signs of new waves.

“Strong and resilient health systems have never been more important than today, which makes the pursuit of universal health care more urgent,” the UN chief stressed. Under-investment in health can have devastating effects on societies and economies. According to him, the pandemic is costing the global economy 375 billion dollars (318 billion euros) a month.

So far, about 500 million jobs have been lost, Guterres concluded. “Human development is declining, for the first time since we began measuring it in 1990,” he said in his statement.

The dossier contained five recommendations:

Urgent control of further transmission of Covid-19 through proven public health measures and a coordinated global response.
Protect the provision of other essential health services during the pandemic. Access to mental health services and sexual and reproductive health programs should not be compromised.
Ensure that everyone, everywhere, has access to future vaccines, tests and treatments against Covid-19. Funding the ACT accelerator is the fastest way to end the pandemic, he said.
Achieving universal health care that does not depend on financial status.
Strengthening pandemic preparedness and response as a global public good.
