Austrians will go to the polls on Sunday in typical fall weather. For the Eastern Alps, Geosphere Austria forecasts high-pressure influence in a northwesterly flow, initially providing dense clouds and light precipitation along the northern side of the Alps and subside during the day. Otherwise, the day of the National Council elections will be sunny, with variable cloudiness and scattered clouds at times. It is doubtful that the weather will significantly affect voter turnout anyway.
Political consultant Thomas Hofer, for example, believes that “this influence is somewhat overestimated.”. For example, the approach to elections is now far more pragmatic than it was decades ago, especially in times of postal voting. Hofer believes that people who don’t vote because of the weather usually don’t anyway. However, the flood-affected areas could be an exception this time. Some people there have “other worries” at the moment.
A cold front on Friday
On Sunday, the snow line will hover around 1500 meters, and the wind will blow moderately in the east, briskly from northwest to north. Early temperatures will reach three to eleven degrees, with daytime highs of twelve to 17 degrees.
Before that, however, a cold front will hit the country: on Friday, it will cause widespread dense clouds and rain showers. The rainfall will initially be concentrated in the south and south-east and the afternoon over the western parts of the country. There is a chance of sunshine, especially south of the main Alpine ridge, during the second half of the day. The risk of local thunderstorms will increase with sunny spells. The wind will blow moderately to briskly from the south in the south, otherwise often only weakly from westerly directions. After ten to 18 degrees in the morning, it will reach 15 to 25 degrees during the day, with the warmest temperatures in southern Styria and Burgenland.
There is a warm front on Sunday
The influence of disturbances will continue to dominate the weather in large parts of Austria on Saturday. Above all, in the northern foothills of the Alps and East Tyrol and Upper Carinthia, it will rain frequently with a falling snow line between 1700 and 2000 meters above sea level. Isolated showers may fall everywhere else. There will be little sunshine, more often in the lowlands of the east and south-east. The wind will blow weakly to moderately from westerly directions. Early temperatures range from seven to 17 degrees, with daytime highs of eleven to 20 degrees.
Election Sunday will be followed by a warm front that will move across Austria during the course of the day and weaken in the process. With high cloud cover from the west, fog or high fog will persist in valleys and basin areas into the morning. It will be cloudy or overcast throughout the country until the afternoon. Rain will spread from Vorarlberg to the Salzkammergut but will subside somewhat simultaneously. Mostly moderate winds from east to south, with early morning temperatures of one to six degrees – in the Alps, it will already be slightly frosty – and daytime highs of 13 to 21 degrees.
On Tuesday, another disturbance will reach the eastern Alps with dense clouds and rain between Vorarlberg and the Waldviertel. The southeast will remain free of precipitation for the time being. Winds will pick up from southeast directions on the eastern edge of the Alps, with winds from the west as the disturbance passes through. Early temperatures will range between two and eight degrees, with daytime highs between twelve and 20 degrees.
