The new coronavirus variant XEC is spreading worldwide and has recently caused an increase in cases in Europe. Experts assume this variant could play a greater role in the coming winter.
British doctor Helen Wall recently warned that the XEC variant causes flu-like symptoms such as high fever, cough, aching limbs, and headaches and that affected people could feel “knocked out.”
These extreme states of exhaustion appear to be a new main symptom of the variant.
According to a report by Focus Online, the XEC variant shows many symptoms already known from earlier coronavirus variants, including fatigue, loss of appetite, and diarrhea.
Although some symptoms appear more severe, virologists reassure that current vaccines offer protection.
The recombination of two sub-variants of Omikron contains mutations that make it easier for the virus to bind to human cells, but more severe courses of the disease have not yet been observed.
Experts nevertheless advise caution, as each new mutation can bring new challenges.
People should take care of themselves, especially in winter, and seek medical advice if they experience flu-like symptoms.
