Average prices for cheap food have risen continuously since 2021, and the situation will unlikely ease in 2025.
Inflation puts a strain on Viennese households
Since the wave of inflation began in September 2021, prices for affordable food have risen by an average of 53%. According to the Chamber of Labor, a shopping basket that cost 51 euros back then now costs almost 78 euros.
“Cheap” food has become 53 percent more expensive since 2021
Of the 40 cheapest food and cleaning products tested, only liquid laundry detergent and cucumbers have become cheaper. Flour and coffee have become 88 percent more expensive since mid-2021, while penne pasta has become 97 percent more expensive. However, orange juice took the top spot, increasing in price by 162 percent.
The increase for tea butter was 85 percent. Pureed tomatoes rose by 87 percent, whole milk by 23 percent and eggs by 38 percent.
Food prices will continue to rise
“It remains expensive: even when comparing December 2023 to December 2024, prices for the 40 cheapest food products and some cleaning products rose by an average of six percent across all stores surveyed. Supermarkets charge an average of 10.2 percent more than discount stores,” concludes the Chamber of Labor.
