The tunnel under Franz-Josefs-Kai is once again a primary construction site. After the section between Schwedenplatz and Schottenring has already been renovated, the area between Schottenring and Friedensbrücke will now follow. The U4 line will therefore be divided from June 28 to September 1. The trains will run from Hütteldorf to Schottenring and from Heiligenstadt to Friedensbrücke. The replacement lines E4 and D will run in between. The main line of the S-Bahn between Floridsdorf and Praterstern is also affected. Wiener Linien is increasing services on the U6, U2, U3, and U4 lines.

But work is not only being carried out underground. A total of eleven kilometers of new tracks are being built this summer. The 49er will be able to run on its usual route again from June 30. Since April, around 1800 meters of track and overhead lines have been renewed in the 14th and 15th districts. The Johnstraße and Breitensee stops have also been upgraded. The work at Franz-Jonas-Platz will also be completed by the end of June. Meanwhile, the renewal of line 18 in the third district is progressing. By the end of the year, 2,500 meters of new track are expected to be laid there.
Track renewal during the summer holidays
Construction work began on Jörgerstraße in mid-June. Wiener Linien is replacing around 1000 meters of track there for line 43, which will therefore continue on a different route to Gersthof. Line 9 ends earlier, but lines 2 and 44 run at shorter intervals. The Ring will also become a construction zone in July. Workers are replacing the tracks on the Universitätsring, Schubertring, and Kärntner Ring. Lines D, 1, and 2 will have to take detours, and the 71 will be severely shortened. A replacement bus runs between Karlsplatz and St. Marx.
Track work on the Ring, Margaretengürtel and in Jörgerstraße.
From July 7, the Margaretengürtel will also become a construction zone. Lines 6 and 18 will receive new tracks there. Line 18 will be discontinued until the end of August. Line 6 will be diverted from Eichenstraße to Meidling station. The replacement line 6E connects Westbahnhof and Eichenstraße. Line 62 runs via Kliebergasse to Matthäusgasse. Wiedner Hauptstraße remains connected by line 1 and the Badner Bahn. Work will also be carried out on the Hohe Warte from July 28. Line 37 will be suspended for almost three weeks. Passengers will switch to line 38 and the bus routes.
Wiener Linien relies on humor
Even though the summer is full of lockdowns, Vienna continues to move forward. Wiener Linien is increasing service intervals, deploying larger vehicles, and creating alternatives. “Better a grumpy face than a huffy rail” is the motto of the current campaign, which uses humor to promote understanding. In addition to replacement buses and Bim lines, sharing services such as WienMobil Rad or the Hüpfer on-demand service support mobility.
Two new lines will be added to the network in the fall. Lines 12 and 27 are then due to start operating. Construction work on the extension of line 18 to the stadium began back in June. Despite detours and construction sites, it is clear that Wiener Linien has a plan to keep the city moving smoothly in the summer.
