The emergency declared because of the coronavirus pandemic could last until Christmas in the Czech Republic. This was admitted by Interior Minister Jan Hamacek yesterday on Czech television CT. The return to normality is not a question of days, but of weeks and months.
By this he meant a number of new infections in the hundreds or even thousands every day. Currently, the authorities reported 11,428 new cases within 24 hours. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 3,251 people have died.
On Friday, the Chamber of Deputies in Prague had agreed to an extension of the state of emergency, initially until November 20. There is a night curfew; schools, restaurants and most stores are closed.
The country had come through the first wave of coronavirus in spring relatively unscathed, but since September it has been struggling with a rapid increase in the infection rate. The opposition demanded the establishment of a parliamentary commission of inquiry.
