Experts assume that there is a high number of unreported corona infections in most countries. Only ten days ago, the USA had exceeded the threshold of nine million confirmed infections. The number of new infections recently rose to an average of more than 100,000 per day. At the weekend, according to Johns Hopkins, the number even exceeded 120,000.
More than 237,000 people in the U.S., a country of about 330 million people, have died in connection with Covid-19 – more than in any other country. According to Johns Hopkins, there are now more than 50 million confirmed infections and 1.25 million related deaths worldwide. The Johns Hopkins website is regularly updated with incoming data and therefore shows a higher level than the official World Health Organization (WHO) figures.
New York’s mayor warns of second wave
New York’s mayor Bill de Blasio has warned the inhabitants of the metropolis of millions against a second wave of corona and the new restrictions that may accompany it. “We must prevent a second wave,” de Blasio said at a press conference on Monday. “It will be dangerously close.”
The mayor urged all New Yorkers to adhere to the rules of hygiene, masks and spacing. He announced that permission for restaurants, cafes and bars to serve drinks partially indoors will be reviewed.
Further restrictions are indispensable if necessary, de Blasio continued. “God forbid that this continues and that we have a full-blown second wave. That means many more restrictions. Unfortunately, it could also mean that we will have to close down our economy in part”.
The state of New York and the metropolis of the same name located in it on the US East Coast had become the epicenter of the pandemic in the US in the spring. Over the summer, the incidence of infection there had stabilized, but recently the situation had become tense again.
